In September 2023, Kees de Groot and Robert Voerknecht reopened Spacebar. A new company was founded, Spacebar 2.0 B.V., and a new club space was built. On a weekly basis, Spacebar welcomed a variety of local and international DJs and Artists. Visitor numbers are still rising and Spacebar now has national recognition as one of the hotspots for underground electronic music in the Netherlands.
However, a few weeks ago Spacebar was confronted with permit complications with the municipality of Enschede. Spacebar’s lease is valid until October 1, 2024, after which the building on Stationsplein will be demolished.
Although we have done everything in our power to resolve these issues, Spacebar is still forced to close. The reason for this is that the municipality has indicated that it is not feasible for Spacebar to arrange the permits for this short period. In addition, Spacebar must remain closed pending the application procedure.
Spacebar has decided to close at this location, but we hope to continue in an alternative space, as we are currently looking for a new location. While this was already necessary, this process is now being accelerated. Spacebar is the only nightclub in the East of the Netherlands for underground music, it fills a gap in Enschede’s night life offering, and acts as a platform for (beginning) local DJs.
A business case is currently being developed and an advisory board will be put together to reinforce the importance of preserving Spacebar for the city of Enschede. The municipality of Enschede will be asked to help find a new suitable location and enact any changes to the zoning plan if necessary. The new location is intended to develop into a cultural hotspot where the design of the bar on Stationsplein, created by artist Jelle de Graaf, will return.
We love you all, and this is not goodbye.
